This is a difficult match. Unless other elements in their natal zodiacs are very compatible, these two may experience a clash of lifestyle preferences that makes it very difficult for them to live together.
Capricorn and Sagittarius have different needs. Typical Capricorns require security and stability, while typical Sagittarians thrive on excitement and risk. Capricorn will find the carefree (and in some cases, careless) Sagittarian approach to life irritating and anxiety-provoking, while Sagittarius is likely to find Capricorn’s realism and seriousness oppressive and depressing.
Capricorns value responsibility, reliability, and consideration in others, and these tend to be weak areas for Sagittarians (except for those who have their ascendants in earth signs such as Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn, or water signs such as Cancer or Scorpio). Sagittarians seek novelty, while Capricorns tend to stick with the known and proven, and to approach new situations and people with caution. As a result, Capricorns may miss out on many valuable experiences, whereas Sagittarians tend to have them all—even the terrible ones that most others have the good sense to avoid.
Another problem with this match is that Sagittarians tend to spend money carelessly or gamble it all on hunches and big (often unrealistic plans), whereas Capricorns are inclined to hang onto it even when they already have plenty saved. Ideally, these two will have a positive effect on each other: Capricorn may curb some of the worst Sagittarian excesses in terms of spending, eating, drinking, or other overindulgences, while Sagittarius can help Capricorn to loosen up, take a few risks, and spend some money on a good time. As business partners, these two form a nice complement, with Sagittarius supplying the grand ideas and flair for self-promotion while Capricorn takes care of the detail work and finances. However, these two may find one another too aggravating in day-to-day life to work or live together unless they can cultivate some of each other’s more positive traits or their ascendants bring their temperaments into better alignment.
Self-expression is another area in which these two differ. Capricorns tend to be modest and considerate. Because they are appearance-conscious and dislike ugly scenes, they show restraint in speech. In some cases they may not speak up even when it is warranted, instead withdrawing and letting communication break down within a relationship. Sagittarians, by contrast, tend to be forthright to a fault, and this honesty can tip over into cruelty at times, though this is more often the result of insensitivity rather than deliberate viciousness.
Capricorn and Sagittarius also tend to have different lifestyle preferences. Typical Sagittarians like to spend their leisure time traveling, chasing new experiences, and meeting new people (unless their ascendants fall in shyer signs). Typical Capricorns prefer to spend their leisure time with partners and friends and on hobbies, fitness activities, or personal projects. It may be difficult for these two to find common ground, though both like to stay active, so they may have a positive effect one another’s health. If they have shared hobbies, the outlook for this pair is more promising, but if they don’t, these two may find that they have little to hold them together.
For this relationship to work, in addition to sharing common interests, these two will probably need to alternate between preferred social activities and develop a tolerance for each other’s different ways of interacting (in particular, Capricorn will need to tolerate some degree of outspokenness and Sagittarius will need to show some restraint, especially in public). This pairing will be more compatible if the Capricorn has a fire ascendant (Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius) or the Sagittarius has an earth ascendant (Taurus, Virgo, or Capricorn).
Note: There is more to astrological compatibility than sun signs alone. Other elements in a person’s natal zodiac also play a role. Ascendants (rising signs), moon signs, and other planetary placements and aspects also shape personality and affect compatibility. For example, a Capricorn with Leo rising will be more extroverted than a typical Capricorn, and a Taurus with Aries rising or the moon in Sagittarius will be more compatible with Sagittarius than a typical Taurus.
