Love, Marriage, and Compatibility for Pisces

By Shaya Weaver

Traditional astrologers believe that Pisceans are most compatible with Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces, and least compatible with Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Sagittarius, but what do the actual marriage and divorce statistics say?

Mathematician Gunter Sachs (1998) conducted a large-scale study of sun signs, encompassing nearly one million people in Switzerland, which found statistically significant results on a number of measures including marriage and divorce. Castille (2000) conducted a similar study in France using marriage statistics collected between 1976 and 1997, which included more than six million marriages. Findings from these studies are summarized below.

Marriage: Pisces Men

The Sachs Study

Sachs found that Pisces men most often marry and are least likely to divorce Scorpio women, and that they are less likely to marry Virgos and Libras. As for whom they are most likely to divorce, there were no statistically significant results. The following is an overall ranking from most common to least common marriages with Pisces men (* indicates that the result is statistically significant – in other words, too big to attribute to random chance):

  1. Scorpio*
  2. Aquarius
  3. Aries
  4. Taurus
  5. Cancer
  6. Pisces (same marriage rate as Sagittarius)
  7. Sagittarius
  8. Gemini
  9. Leo
  10. Capricorn
  11. Libra*
  12. Virgo*

It’s unsurprising that Pisces and Scorpio often make a good match. With two such deep, intuitive signs, there is the potential for an exceptionally profound connection. Pisces can break through the fierce emotional defenses Scorpio maintains and Scorpio provides much-needed stability for the anxious and sometimes chaotic Piscean temperament.

Pisces men’s lower-than average marriage rate with Virgos and Libras also accords with traditional astrological beliefs about compatibility. Emotionally guarded, pragmatic, intellectually minded Virgo doesn’t always make an easy match with sensitive, affectionate, open-minded Pisces, and Pisceans need time alone to recharge their batteries, which sociable Libras may not understand. Also, Libras tend to see both sides of an issue and often refuse to take sides, whereas Pisceans will passionately defend one side in any conflict (usually that of the underdog), which can lead to disagreements. In addition, Libra hates emotional scenes and may shut down any talk of feelings, making Pisces feel ignored or insecure.

The Castille Study

Castille found that Pisces men in France most often marry Pisces women but have a below-average marriage rate with Libras and Cancers. The following is an overall ranking from most common to least common marriages with Pisces men (* indicates that the result is statistically significant):

  1. Pisces*
  2. Aries
  3. Scorpio
  4. Virgo
  5. Leo
  6. Sagittarius
  7. Taurus
  8. Aquarius
  9. Capricorn
  10. Gemini
  11. Libra*
  12. Cancer*

It’s no surprise that Pisceans seek one another out, as two Pisces are likely to have shared interests, attitudes, lifestyle preferences, and ways of relating to the world.

All About Pisces, New Expanded Edition, now available in paperback and Kindle formats

Libras and Pisceans, on the other hand, can find it challenging to get along in day-to-day life unless their rising or moon signs are more compatible, so it’s unsurprising to see Libra near the bottom of the Pisces men’s marriage list. However, finding Cancer at the bottom of the list is unexpected because these two signs are considered to be very compatible. It’s possible that they more often become friends rather than lovers, or that having two moody, sensitive, emotionally reactive individuals in a relationship together creates problems for some couples.

Marriage: Pisces Women

Sachs Study

Sachs found that Pisces women are more likely to marry Scorpio men than those of any other sign and least likely to marry Sagittarians. There were no statistically significant results for which signs Pisces women are most likely to divorce, but Sachs found that they were least likely to part from Capricorns.

Pisces and Capricorn may be statistically favoured due to their complementary traits. Pisces can help cautious Capricorn become more open and trusting, and Capricorn can provide the stability and security Pisces craves. Both signs also tend to be careful with money, so fights over finances are less likely.

The following is an overall ranking from most common to least common marriages with Pisces women (* indicates that the result is statistically significant):

  1. Scorpio*
  2. Cancer
  3. Capricorn
  4. Aries
  5. Leo
  6. Aquarius
  7. Pisces
  8. Gemini
  9. Libra
  10. Virgo
  11. Taurus
  12. Sagittarius*

Seeing Scorpio at the top of the Pisces women’s marriage list is unsurprising. These two water signs can forge a deep and powerful connection, and they also have many complementary traits. Pisces can help Scorpio relax and bring his guard down, and Scorpio can act as a solid anchor to keep Pisces grounded and stabilized.

It’s also no surprise that Pisces women make it the altar less often with Sagittarian men. Pisces needs reassurance and comfort during bleak moods, and Sagittarius tends to be insensitive. Pisces may find Sagittarius cruel and uncaring while Sagittarius finds Pisces too intense or needy when she’s pulled down by dark emotional states. Also, the Sagittarian tendency for careless spending is at odds with Piscean fiscal caution, which may trigger conflicts.

Castille Study

Castille found that Pisces women in France are most likely to marry other Pisceans and less likely to marry Gemini and Sagittarius men. The following is an overall ranking from most common to least common marriages with Pisces women (*indicates that the result is statistically significant):

  1. Pisces*
  2. Taurus
  3. Aquarius
  4. Aries
  5. Scorpio
  6. Leo
  7. Libra
  8. Capricorn
  9. Cancer
  10. Virgo
  11. Sagittarius*
  12. Gemini*

Two Pisceans will often share the same outlook and lifestyle preferences, so it’s no surprise that they are drawn to one another, and finding Gemini at the bottom of the list accords with traditional astrological beliefs about compatibility as well. Pisceans need stability and consistency from their partners because they are prone to emotional volatility, but Gemini is changeable and erratic, and neither can act as an anchor for the other. Sagittarius can also be a problematic match because Pisces and Sagittarius will often find it difficult to meet each other’s needs. Pisces women seek partners who provide a feeling of security and reliable emotional support, and Sagittarians don’t usually do well in this role, given their independent natures. However, if the rising signs or moon signs of the two partners are more compatible, these difficulties will be minimized and compatibility will be better.

The Best Match for Pisces

The best match for Pisces appears to be another Pisces or a Scorpio. However, Pisceans who find themselves romantically entangled with one of the less compatible signs should not despair. Plenty of relationships and marriages between supposedly incompatible signs have lasted.

It’s important to keep in mind that these are statistical tendencies; this doesn’t mean that every romance between incompatible signs is doomed. For example, out of 6,498,320 marriages encompassing all possible sign combinations in the Castille study, there were 1,323 more marriages between Pisces men and Pisces women than would be expected if sun signs had no effect, whereas between Pisces men and Cancer women, there were 474 fewer marriages than would be expected if pairings were random. However, there still were many marriages between the supposedly least compatible signs.

Astrology is complex, and there is more to take into account than just sun signs. Two people with incompatible sun signs may have highly compatible rising signs or moon signs that can make the difference between a bad match and a good match with a bit of an “edge” that keeps things interesting.

*The methodology of the Sachs study has been criticized and it remains controversial. I have found no critiques of the Castille study thus far.

I was born March 4th 1972 ive been married to a Virgo for over 26 years. We have our moments but he is the nicest man I’ve ever known and if anything I’m the tough one lol. I wouldn’t want anyone else I love my virgo and we get along pretty well for the most part or believe me I wouldn’t have stuck around but he’s perfect for me.

Born on the 5th of March, 2000 here. I’ve been finding myself attracted to my bestfriend (girl), who is an Aries herself. Born on the 27th of March to be exact. We get along really well and I’m glad the chart says the same. It may not be the first on the list of most compatible but neither is it on the very bottom. Good “sign” I shall say.

Born 2-19-1980. Been married once but she passed. Sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but I’ve never had a problem getting women. I do find that satisfaction is another thing. At first they all start great but then it feels different and I feel myself slipping away sexually and emotionally. 4 engagements later I wonder if I will ever find that true connection or is it all about pleasure and helping them. Any other Pisces ever experienced the same?

Any one been with Cappy I’m 3/5 but I have a strong dominant streak in me I can’t seem to curb. Fire is strong in my chart with a touch of air I feel hopeless in finding love I’m tired of having my guard up all the time.

Pisces woman here and in a relationship with a Cancer man. We’ve been together for a year and a month already and I never had a relationship that feels at home like the one we have now. But I have to say that years before we met, I had a special relationship with a Scorpio man. It didn’t end well as much as I’d like, but I’m just happy we both moved on. In the end, the future depends on the two people involved in the relationship. The zodiac may say you’re compatible, but if you don’t do anything to make the relationship actually work, the compatibility is useless.

It was a great data to come to a conclusion of how the compatibility works and why the divorces happen. Thank you for the great analysis.
