Typical Sagittarians are optimistic and helpful companions, quick to lend a hand and generous with their time, money, and energy. Sagittarians are happy to share whatever they have with family, friends, acquaintances, and even strangers in some cases because they always expect more of everything to come their way.
Freedom-Loving and Independent
When pursuing romantic prospects, Sagittarians love the chase, but they are not always as interested in the prize once they’ve achieved it. They are unhappy if a lover is possessive, overly cautious, or too much of a homebody, and they even have trouble with these qualities in friends.
Typical Sagittarians prefer easy going companions who share their love of freedom and travel, and who don’t restrict their activities in any way. Ideal friends and lovers are independent, open-minded people who love physical activities and seek new experiences.
Genuine and Forthright
Sagittarians don’t put on false personas. Honest and forthright, sometimes to the point of giving offense, they can hurt the feelings of more sensitive types, but those who appreciate straightforwardness will find Sagittarian bluntness refreshing.
Because they value authenticity and tend to say whatever is on their minds, diplomacy and sensitivity to the feelings of others are not Sagittarian strengths. Typical Sagittarians are most compatible with thick-skinned individuals who are not easily offended or hurt.
On the plus side, Sagittarians usually have a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to laugh at themselves, which means that they take criticism better than most and are not as likely to hold grudges. Also, because Sagittarians tend to say whatever is on their minds, the lines of communication are kept open.
Fun-Loving and Sociable
Sagittarians are fun-loving, playful friends and partners who usually have very active social lives. They prefer to get out and do things rather than spending cozy evenings at home, and when they go out with others, they tend to be generous, often paying for their companions’ food and drinks if they have the money to do so (or a credit card they can run up for as long as possible).
Sagittarians are most compatible with extroverted friends and partners who like to go out and meet new people. They do well with adventurous companions, and they don’t understand (and are often irritated by) cautious or introverted individuals.
Sagittarius has a reputation for being irresponsible, unreliable, and careless with money, though the degree to which these problems manifest depends on other elements in the Sagittarian’s natal zodiac. Although Sagittarians are helpful when present, they cannot always be counted on to show up on time (or at all), and because they are insensitive, they cannot always be relied on for emotional support.
Finances shared with others can be problematic, as Sagittarians are often big spenders who buy things on impulse or squander everything on a good time or a bad gamble. Friends and lovers who require stability and consistency may also be devastated by the Sagittarian tendency to wander off in search of excitement when things get too settled and dull in any sort of relationship, romantic or platonic.
The Sagittarian tendency toward irresponsibility can be mitigated by other elements in the natal zodiac. For example, a Sagittarius with Capricorn or Taurus rising or Saturn conjunct the ascendant will be more conscientious and inclined to follow through on promises, so some Sagittarians are more dependable than is typical for this sign.
Sagittarius Compatibility with Other Signs
The Atypical Sagittarius
The sun sign isn’t the only element that influences personality. Aspects and planetary placements, particularly the moon sign and rising sign (ascendant), are also important. For example, a Sagittarius with Cancer rising will be more relationship-oriented, sensitive, domestic, and reliable, and with Capricorn rising, a Sagittarius will be better at saving money and far more responsible and diplomatic. Virgo rising can make a Sagittarius more cautious, practical, and reliable, though also more prone to anxiety, while Leo rising will have the opposite effect, creating an even stronger tendency toward extravagance and risk-taking.
