This can be a difficult pairing unless other elements in their natal zodiacs are more harmonious. These signs have little in common, and Sagittarius will probably find Scorpio too possessive and demanding, and Scorpio will find Sagittarius selfish and insensitive.
Scorpios crave deep, solid connections, while Sagittarians usually like to keep their options open. Even when Sagittarians do commit, they require the freedom to have friends and interests outside the primary relationship and will not be happy operating as an isolated twosome. Scorpios need demonstrations of commitment from others to feel secure, and any sign of disloyalty is deeply upsetting to them. The greatest risk with this pairing is that Scorpio will push for a more serious commitment early on and Sagittarius will flee.
Another problem with this match is that these two signs relate to the world in very different ways. Scorpios commit themselves fully to people, projects, and places, seeing things through to the end (even those that should probably be abandoned). Sagittarians, by contrast, tend to move lightly through life, picking up and discarding enthusiasms, lifestyles, and places of residence (the exception to this rule is a Sagittarius with a stabilizing ascendant such as Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, or Capricorn). Typical Sagittarians have a lighthearted attitude toward life and get over setbacks and emotional slights quickly. They can also be quite inconsiderate of other people’s feelings (usually due to emotional obliviousness rather than deliberate cruelty). Scorpios, on the other hand, tend to be sensitive and serious. They hold onto hurt feelings, nurse grudges, and require understanding from others. They also tend to be more considerate and reliable than the typical Sagittarian, and will be very resentful of any failure to fulfill obligations and keep commitments.
Scorpio and Sagittarius are also likely to clash over lifestyle preferences. Scorpios need security, both in their finances and their relationships. Sagittarians tend to be careless or extravagant with money, and settling down too definitively can make them feel trapped. Sagittarians want to meet lots of different people, ideally in unusual or faraway places, while Scorpios prefer to establish a smaller number of high-quality intimate connections. Scorpios also devote themselves intensely to particular activities and tend to be perfectionists, whereas Sagittarians like to try many different things just for the experience. However, despite these differences, there is some common ground to unite these signs.
Both Scorpio and Sagittarius tend to cope well with change and thrive in times of adversity. These tough, resilient sun signs deal stoically with hardship and are often at their best in difficult situations. They are also inclined toward generosity and even heroism. However, to get along day to day will require a fair bit of compromise from these two. Sagittarius will need to develop some restraint and tact when speaking, and make an effort to avoid triggering Scorpio’s insecurities, and Scorpio will have to let the smaller things go rather than obsessing over minor discourtesies and misdeeds, as well as giving Sagittarius more freedom (and the benefit of the doubt sometimes as well).
In a best-case scenario, these two will have positive effects on one another. Ideally, some of Sagittarius’s sunny optimism will rub off on Scorpio, and Scorpio will help Sagittarius cultivate the willpower and self-control required to do something productive with the latter’s many bright ideas.
Note: There is more to astrological compatibility than sun signs alone. Other elements in a person’s natal zodiac also play a role. Ascendants (rising signs), moon signs, and other planetary placements and aspects also shape personality and affect compatibility. For example, a Capricorn with Leo rising will be more extroverted than a typical Capricorn, and a Taurus with Aries rising or the moon in Sagittarius will be more compatible with Sagittarius than a typical Taurus.
